Research and Training Facilities at UC Davis

Information on different research and training facilities on campus.

Hybrid Vehicle Power Systems Lab: This laboratory was established in 1993 for testing batteries, fuel cells, and ultra-capacitors. The primary test units in the lab are a Bitrode battery tester (50V, 400A) and a 6-channel Arbin tester (20V, 20A). Test profiles (current and power) are PC-controlled and data can be sampled at rates from 10-100 Hz. The lab is able to supply and regulate bottled hydrogen and high pressure air for fuel cell testing. It has a test bench for the Ballard MarkV 4 kW fuel cell. Hydrogen detectors are installed in the lab. A number of fuel cell, battery, and ultra-capacitor test projects have been conducted using custom LabView software.

Hybrid Vehicle Design, Assembly and Test Labs: The university has several different labs that support hybrid vehicle research. The Student Design Lab within the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering (MAE) Department consists of a 1,750 square foot workspace and two classrooms, one of which is used for tool storage, automotive equipment, and composite material storage. The second classroom contains four computer terminals and a work area for the student design groups. The high bay area has space for several vehicles as well as workspace for other student projects.

Hydrogen Production and Utilization Lab: The HYPAUL is a dedicated laboratory with associated multi-function instrumentation and control infrastructure that enables research on hydrogen production methods and reformation of bio-alcohols.

On-campus Hydrogen Refueling Station: UC Davis is home to a hydrogen refueling station that was built to support the ITS-Davis Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle demonstration program. A separate fueling station dispenses a hydrogen-natural gas mixture (30% hydrogen by volume) to Unitrans transit buses. The stations were built with funding from the Federal Transit Administration as part of a project to convert two CNG buses to operate on H2/CNG mixtures.
